Audience Research
Audience Research
For this brief, I carried out audience research to better understand my audience and who would be watching or viewing my final product. To do this I created a Google Form to collect and collate my responses for this research.I asked on my form how old my audience were, and also what their gender was, as this would help me figure out who my audience are, and what they tend to do and watch based on stereotypical age and gender norms.
I also asked what their sexuality was, as eventually this would help me cater my final product to my main audience. Next, I asked if they had any talents. This would help me as I am basing my final product around the talents of people in the North East, and it would help me see what people class as talents, which is what I asked in my next question.
I asked if they tended to watch North East related films, programs or documentaries, as this would help me figure out if people were interested in something focused on the local area. I also asked if they payed any attention to locally made media, such as films- as this would also help me figure out if they would be interested in my product. Finally, I asked if they worked, and if they were a college or university student, as it will help me cater my product to my audience as a whole.
After creating this form, I sent it out to people so that I could receive their answers on it, and to truly understand who my target audience were.
Audience Profile
I figured out that the majority of my target audience are aged 17, with the following percentage being 26.7% of my audience being aged 20 over. I also figured out that the majority of my audience are female, with the male percentage of my audience being only 33.3%. 13.3% of my audience chose to not disclose their gender.I also found out that the majority of my audience were either straight or bisexual. This helps me understand my audience better. I asked if they had any talents, to which only 5 people said yes, and 3 people thought that they might, which did help with the next question. For this next question I had to omit two of the answers that were given, as they were not serious talents. The three people who did say they had a talent mentioned how they were either comfortable in front of a camera, or how they had experience in stop motion. The final person mentioned how they were talented in comedy and magic.
I then asked if my audience tended to watch North East programs, to which the majority stated that they do not. This helps me in my project as I know that perhaps this will be one of the first programs my audience watch about the North east, so perhaps I will have to make it captivating. When I asked if they tended to pay attention to Northern based media, the majority of my audience stated that they did not, whilst the rest said that they paid attention sometimes. This, again, will help me figure out how exactly to film and produce my documentary to keep the audience interested.
The majority of my audience stated that they did not work, which perhaps means they have more time to watch media such as documentaries or films, especially ones that are centered around where they are from.
Finally, I found out that most of my audience were college students. The rest of the responses stating that they were not a student were people I gave the form to outside of college. This helps me understand that perhaps the ones who are students may be more interested in learning about local talent.
Using this research I have determined that my audience fall under the E or D social grade, meaning that they low grade workers or unemployed, or semi skilled manual workers. After collecting and collating this research, I put it into an audience profile to finish off my audience research.
